While the volume of data on the safety of CBD for children is lacking and unlikely to grow soon, due to restrictive laws that make clinical trials difficult, findings so far indicate that cannabidiol is safe for children.
Children are actually exposed to cannabinoids for the first time through the endocannabinoids found in their mother’s breast milk. These cannabinoids in breast milk are used by the baby’s endocannabinoid system as a form of self-regulation as the cells of the body continue to grow and mature.
Dr. Leslie Iversen of Oxford University, who has studied the safety profile of different substances, believes that cannabinoids are even safer than aspirin and can be uses long-term without serious side effects.
Mexican physician, Dr. Saul Garza Morales, found CBD hemp oil to effectively reduce seizures in children with severe pediatric epilepsy while causing zero side effects.
Although studies indicate that CBD shows potential for reducing nausea and vomiting, managing pain, combating psychosis disorders, contesting inflammatory disorders, inhibiting tumors, and battling anxiety and depression – CBD has received most of its attention for suppressing seizure activities.
There are numerous cases where CBD has improved the lives of children with epilepsy, although it was frowned upon by doctors who treated the patients – namely Charlotte Figi, the baby who couldn’t live the life mirrored by her twin brother due to her seizures that started at 3 months old. Overall, CBD has been shown to be effective in over 80% of children with epilepsy.
In these cases, scientist Ethan B. Russo believes that supplementing phytocannabinoids like CBD would be an all-natural therapeutic treatment method in repairing the endocannabinoid system. This is a much safer alternative than existing pharmaceuticals which can cause liver failure, aplastic anemia, regression of behavior and growth and development.
